Storefront Door Locks in Redwood City by Sequoia Lock & Key
1You tell us the door, and the figure is settled from the published list before the van turns its key.
2Before the van leaves, a text tells you who is coming and roughly when.
3The receipt shows the figure that was read back to you. Nothing is added at the door.

The shop doors of Redwood City are mostly the same door: a slim aluminum stile around a full pane of glass. What lives inside that stile is its own trade, with deadlatches, hookbolt deadlocks, mortise cylinders that need the right cam, paddle handles, thumbturns and a closer overhead. A bakery on Broadway, a nail salon on El Camino, a corner market on Middlefield Rd, the shops at Woodside Plaza. Sequoia Lock & Key keeps those parts on the van and repairs or replaces them so the door locks the way your lease and your insurer both assume.

Sag is checked before any part is blamed. The most common complaint from a shop is a key that turns while the door stays unlocked, and in most of those the lock is innocent. A stile door hangs on a pivot at the top and one at the bottom; the bottom pivot wears, the door drops a few millimeters, and the latch stops meeting its pocket in the strike. Resetting or replacing the pivot and moving the strike cures it. When the deadlatch itself has worn short, it is replaced, and the mortise cylinder is repinned or exchanged for one with the correct cam and tailpiece. A thumbturn on the inside lets whoever closes lock up without standing on the pavement looking for a key.

Storefront work runs $149 to $459 per door with hardware included. A deadlatch swap or a new mortise cylinder is the $149 end. A hookbolt deadlock with a restricted cylinder, a paddle handle and a closer adjustment on a heavy door reaches $459. The $89 service call is inside the figure. Repinning a storefront cylinder after an employee leaves is $25 to $41 per cylinder. After 8pm the visit carries $50 and before 7am it carries $85, both stated when the figure is read back.

Tell us the door: a photograph of the door edge and one of the lock face. Hear the figure read back on that call. Watch it fitted: the alignment check, the repair or the replacement, the keying, a closer test through a full swing, and a receipt naming the brand and model fitted in case the landlord asks what went on the door. Pay what was read, card or tap, before you open for the day.

Restaurant on Broadway with an aluminum door whose deadlatch had stopped catching, which meant the last person out was jamming a chair against it. Quoted $345 for a new deadlatch, a cylinder and a closer adjustment. He came at half past nine before prep started, adjusted the strike so the latch actually meets it, and the card was charged $345. He did not try to sell me anything for the kitchen door.

FAQ

Storefront Door Locks: quick answers

At our shop on El Camino the key turns all the way, but a push opens the door anyway.+

Two causes, sometimes both. The bottom pivot has worn and the door has dropped so the latch misses the strike, or the deadlatch has worn short of its throw. Either is ordinary on a door that opens four hundred times a day. The pivot and strike are reset and the worn part is exchanged, and the fault does not return.

Our Broadway shop has a roll-down grille with its own key. Can the front door and the grille share one?+

Usually possible. If the two cylinders share a keyway, they are pinned to one key. If they do not, the grille cylinder is exchanged for one that does, or both are repinned to a fresh key, and copies are cut for the people who close.

An employee left with a key.+

The cylinder is repinned in about ten minutes at $25 to $41, and new keys are cut at the van for the staff who stay. Nothing else on the door is touched.
