Smart Lock Installation in Redwood City by Sequoia Lock & Key
1You tell us the door, and the figure is settled from the published list before the van turns its key.
2Before the van leaves, a text tells you who is coming and roughly when.
3The receipt shows the figure that was read back to you. Nothing is added at the door.

A smart lock is usually bought for someone else. A cleaner between guests in a downtown flat. A dog walker at a house in Roosevelt. A roommate who has lost three keys since spring. A landlord in the Shores who would rather change a code than drive over the bridge. Sequoia Lock & Key installs Schlage, Yale, Kwikset, August, Level and Lockly units, along with retrofit models that keep your existing deadbolt and cylinder where they are.

The small motor in a smart lock cannot force a bolt that a hand has been forcing for years. So the first job is the door, not the lock: the strike is moved or filed until the bolt slides home with the door closed and the weatherstrip compressed. Only then is the box opened. The unit is mounted, the cylinder is keyed to the key you already carry where the model allows it, and the app is paired to your phone rather than the technician's. Your first codes are entered while the van is still outside. Wi-Fi strength is read at the door itself, because a router in the back bedroom of a stucco house often does not reach the porch, and a bridge goes in where it falls short. Matter and HomeKit are set up if the house runs on them. One honest limit: a 1920s door with a mortise set does not take a retrofit unit, and you are told that on the call, not on the doorstep.

Installation runs $175 to $449. Labor on a lock you already own, fitted to a door with standard preparation, is $175. Supplying the lock, adding a bridge, replacing the handleset alongside the deadbolt, or adapting a unit to older hardware reaches $449. The $89 service call is inside the figure. A pairing that runs long because a firmware update crawls does not change what was read back.

Tell us the door and the lock you have or want, and whether the door carries a modern deadbolt or something older. Hear the figure read back. Watch it paired: the door check, the strike, the mounting, the keying, the pairing, the first codes, a signal test, and a walk through adding and deleting a code yourself so you never call about it. Pay what was read at the door, receipt by email.

Townhome in the Shores, HOA with opinions about what goes on an exterior door. I sent the HOA rule sheet on the call and got $315 for a keypad deadbolt in the finish they allow. He fitted it in about forty minutes, paired it to my phone, set a code for the cleaner and kept the old deadbolt aside in case the board ever asks for it back. The written line for the HOA went out the same afternoon.

FAQ

Smart Lock Installation: quick answers

My HOA in Redwood Shores has rules about what goes on the outside of the door. What fits?+

A retrofit unit, which replaces only the inside thumbturn of the existing deadbolt. The exterior, the cylinder and the building's key are untouched, and nothing visible from the walkway changes. When you move out, the original thumbturn goes back on in five minutes.

Four roommates in a Centennial house, everyone wants a code.+

This is the case the product was designed for. One code per person, and when somebody moves out the code is deleted from the app in a minute rather than the house being rekeyed. Keep a mechanical key in a sensible place for the day the batteries die.

If the internet goes down in our Shores building, or the power does, are we locked out?+

Nothing at the door. Codes live in the lock's own memory and the batteries power the keypad, so anyone with a code still gets in. What waits for the network is remote unlocking and the notifications. Battery state is checked at install and the app gives weeks of warning.
